What to Do in Lombok for 4 Days by Rental Car

what to do in lombok for 4 days

If you are wondering what to do in Lombok for 4 days, renting a car gives you one of the easiest ways to explore the island. Lombok has beautiful beaches, traditional villages, mountain scenery, waterfalls, and quiet coastal roads. However, many of these places sit far apart.

A rental car lets you travel between different parts of Lombok without depending on limited public transportation. You can leave early, stop whenever you find a good viewpoint, and carry your luggage comfortably between hotels.

For this four-day Lombok itinerary, I recommend starting in South Lombok, continuing to Sembalun, visiting the waterfalls around Senaru, and finishing on the west coast.

Is Four Days Enough to Explore Lombok?

Four days will not cover every corner of Lombok, but it gives you enough time to experience the island’s main landscapes.

You can visit beaches in the south, learn about Sasak culture, enjoy the mountain atmosphere in Sembalun, and walk to waterfalls in North Lombok. The key is choosing a realistic route and avoiding too many stops in one day.

I do not recommend adding a Mount Rinjani trek to this itinerary. A proper trek requires additional time, preparation, and physical energy. For a four-day road trip, enjoying the mountain views from Sembalun works much better.

Day 1 – Discover South Lombok and Sasak Culture

Start your first day from Lombok International Airport or your hotel. If you arrive in the morning, you can immediately begin the trip toward Kuta Lombok.

Visit Sade Traditional Village

Your first stop can be Sade Traditional Village, which sits along the main road from the airport to Kuta.

Here, you can see traditional Sasak houses, watch local weaving activities, and learn about the daily life of Lombok’s indigenous community. You do not need to spend several hours here. Around 45 minutes to one hour usually feels enough for a relaxed visit.

Explore Kuta Mandalika

Continue driving toward Kuta Mandalika for lunch. Kuta has many restaurants, coffee shops, hotels, and small local businesses, making it a convenient base for exploring South Lombok.

After lunch, drive east toward Tanjung Aan Beach.

Relax at Tanjung Aan Beach

Tanjung Aan offers a wide coastline, calm blue water, and soft sand. You can swim, relax under a beach shelter, or simply enjoy the scenery.

The road from Kuta to Tanjung Aan is relatively easy, so this stop works well even after a morning flight.

Watch the Sunset from Merese Hill

Before sunset, drive to the entrance of Merese Hill. The walk to the top takes some effort, but the wide coastal view makes it worthwhile.

From the hill, you can see Tanjung Aan, surrounding bays, and rolling green or golden hills depending on the season.

After sunset, return to Kuta Lombok and stay there for the night.

Day 2 – Drive Along Lombok’s Southern Coast

Use the second day to explore the beaches west of Kuta. This route offers scenic roads, small villages, and several coastal viewpoints.

Visit Mawun Beach in the Morning

Leave Kuta after breakfast and drive toward Mawun Beach. The beach sits inside a curved bay surrounded by hills.

Morning usually offers a calmer atmosphere and softer sunlight. You can swim, walk along the sand, or sit under a local beach shelter.

Continue to Selong Belanak Beach

From Mawun, continue to Selong Belanak. This beach has a longer coastline and more facilities than many smaller beaches nearby.

Selong Belanak works well for lunch, beginner surfing lessons, swimming, or relaxing for a few hours. Local food stalls and restaurants operate around the beach area.

Add an Optional Beach Stop

You may add Mawi Beach or Semeti Beach if you still have enough time and feel comfortable with rougher access roads.

However, I prefer not to force too many destinations into one day. Lombok feels more enjoyable when you have time to sit, swim, and enjoy the view instead of constantly rushing back to the car.

Return to Kuta before dark and stay for a second night.

Day 3 – Take a Scenic Drive to Sembalun

Day three includes the longest drive of the trip, so leave Kuta early. The journey to Sembalun may take several hours depending on traffic, road conditions, and your chosen route.

The scenery changes gradually as you leave the dry southern coastline and enter greener areas near East Lombok.

Stop Along the Way

You can stop for breakfast, coffee, or lunch in Central or East Lombok. Make sure you fill the fuel tank before entering the mountain area.

As you approach Sembalun, the road becomes more winding. Drive carefully, especially during rain or fog.

Enjoy Pusuk Sembalun Viewpoint

Pusuk Sembalun Viewpoint offers one of the best views over the valley. You can see farms, villages, surrounding hills, and the slopes near Mount Rinjani.

This stop also gives you a chance to rest after the long drive.

Explore Sembalun Village

After checking into your accommodation, explore the area at a slower pace.

You can visit Bukit Selong, walk near local farms, enjoy strawberries when available, or drink coffee while looking at the mountains. Sembalun has a cooler climate than Kuta, so bring a light jacket for the evening.

Stay overnight in Sembalun instead of driving back south.

Day 4 – Visit Senaru Waterfalls and the West Coast

Leave Sembalun in the morning and drive toward Senaru in North Lombok.

The road passes through rural areas with rice fields, forests, villages, and mountain views.

Visit Sendang Gile Waterfall

Sendang Gile is the easier waterfall to reach from Senaru. You need to walk down several steps, but the route usually feels manageable for visitors with average fitness.

The waterfall sits inside a green forest area and offers a refreshing break after several days on the road.

Continue to Tiu Kelep Waterfall

You can continue to Tiu Kelep if you have enough time and feel comfortable trekking.

The route requires more walking and may become slippery, especially after rain. Wear proper footwear and consider using a local guide if you do not know the trail.

Travelers with young children, elderly family members, or an afternoon flight can skip Tiu Kelep and spend more time at Sendang Gile.

Drive Through Lombok’s West Coast

After Senaru, continue toward Senggigi through the northern and western coastal road.

You can stop at a viewpoint near Malimbu if daylight allows. The route offers views of the sea, hills, small bays, and the Gili Islands in the distance.

Stay in Senggigi or Mataram when you have an additional night. For an evening flight, continue toward Lombok International Airport, but leave enough time because the drive can take several hours.

Where Should You Stay During the Trip?

For an efficient itinerary, I recommend this hotel arrangement:

  • Nights 1 and 2 in Kuta Lombok
  • Night 3 in Sembalun
  • Optional night 4 in Senggigi or Mataram

Staying in different areas reduces unnecessary driving. You also get to experience the different atmosphere of South, East, North, and West Lombok.

Self-Drive or Car Rental with a Driver?

A self-drive car gives you complete freedom. It suits travelers who feel comfortable driving in Indonesia, using navigation apps, and handling narrow or winding roads.

A rental car with a driver offers a more relaxed experience. You do not need to focus on directions, parking, or unfamiliar road conditions. A local driver can also help you estimate travel times and adjust the route when the weather changes.

For first-time visitors, families, or travelers who want to enjoy the scenery, I usually recommend choosing a car with a driver.

Practical Tips for Driving Around Lombok

Start each day early, especially when traveling between Kuta, Sembalun, Senaru, and Senggigi.

Download an offline map because mobile signals may weaken in rural and mountain areas. Carry cash for parking, entrance fees, local food stalls, and small shops.

Before leaving, check the tires, brakes, air conditioning, fuel level, and vehicle documents. Avoid driving too fast on mountain roads, and do not force yourself to travel after dark when you feel tired.

Most importantly, keep the itinerary flexible. Rain, traffic, road repairs, or longer meal stops can change your schedule.

Explore Lombok Comfortably with Vibes Lombok

Planning a multi-day road trip can feel confusing when you do not know the distance between each destination.

Lombok Car Rental by Vibes Lombok helps travelers explore the island through self-drive rentals or cars with local drivers. You can use the service for airport pickup, family trips, intercity transfers, beach tours, or complete four-day itineraries.

A local driver can help you choose an efficient route, find suitable meal stops, and avoid spending too much time on the road. You can also discuss the number of passengers, luggage capacity, pickup location, and travel schedule before booking.

The goal is not only to provide a car but also to make your Lombok road trip feel smoother and more comfortable.
