Best Things to Do in Bangsal Lombok Before or After Visiting the Gili Islands

To Do in Bangsal

For many travelers, Bangsal is simply the place where the journey to the Gili Islands begins or ends. You arrive, catch a boat, and move on.

But I think that is a missed opportunity.

If you have a few extra hours before your boat or after returning from Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, or Gili Meno, there are several interesting places around Bangsal that are easy to add to your itinerary.

Some of the best things to do in Bangsal Lombok are actually just outside the harbor area, from quiet beaches and local seafood spots to scenic coastal viewpoints. You do not need a full day either. Even a few hours can turn a simple transfer into a small Lombok road trip.

Is Bangsal Lombok Worth Exploring?

Bangsal itself is not a tourist town like Senggigi or Kuta Lombok.

The harbor is the main reason most international travelers come here because it connects mainland Lombok with the Gili Islands. However, Bangsal also sits in a convenient position between North Lombok and the scenic west coast.

That means you can easily combine your arrival or departure from the Gilis with beaches, viewpoints, local food, and a beautiful coastal drive.

I would not necessarily recommend spending an entire holiday in Bangsal, but if you already have a few spare hours here, there is no reason to rush away.

Best Things to Do in Bangsal Lombok

Here are some places and activities I would consider if you have extra time around Bangsal.

1. Relax at Sire Beach

If you want somewhere quiet close to Bangsal, Sire Beach is one of the easiest options.

The beach has clear water, a relaxed atmosphere, and views toward the surrounding landscape. On clear days, you may also get a beautiful view of Mount Rinjani in the distance.

You can spend your time swimming, walking along the beach, or simply sitting under the trees and enjoying a slower side of Lombok.

I particularly like Sire Beach for travelers who have just returned from the Gilis but are not ready to head straight to Senggigi, Mataram, or the airport.

Even an hour here can make your transfer feel much less rushed.

2. Stop at Nipah Beach for Swimming and Local Seafood

Nipah Beach is another place I recommend adding to your route.

It sits along the coastal road between the Bangsal area and Senggigi, so you do not need to make a huge detour if you are already traveling south.

The bay feels much more local than many famous Lombok beaches. You will often see fishing boats on the sand, local families around the beach, and simple warungs serving food.

Swimming is possible when sea conditions are calm, and you can also bring snorkeling gear if you want to look around the rocky areas of the bay.

But personally, one of my favorite reasons to stop here is the food.

Ordering grilled fish, rice, sambal, and a fresh coconut at a simple seaside warung is a nice way to get back into the Lombok atmosphere after spending a few days on the Gilis.

3. Enjoy the Coastal Drive Toward Senggigi

Sometimes the journey itself is one of the best activities.

The road from Bangsal toward Senggigi passes beaches, hills, small bays, villages, and several points where you can see the Lombok Strait.

Instead of treating Bangsal to Senggigi as a simple hotel transfer, I prefer looking at it as a short coastal road trip.

You can stop at Nipah Beach, take photos at a viewpoint, have lunch at a local warung, and continue toward Senggigi without making your itinerary complicated.

This route works especially well after returning from the Gili Islands because you already need transportation from Bangsal anyway.

4. Stop at Malimbu Hill for the View

If you arrive back from the Gilis in the afternoon, consider stopping at Malimbu Hill on your way toward Senggigi.

It is one of the better-known viewpoints along Lombok’s west coast.

From the elevated coastline, you can look across the sea and see small islands in the distance. On a clear day, Bali’s Mount Agung may also appear across the Lombok Strait.

Late afternoon is my favorite time to come here.

You can enjoy the changing colors over the ocean before continuing to Senggigi for dinner or checking into your hotel.

If your timing works well, this is probably one of the easiest ways to add a Lombok sunset to your Gili transfer day.

5. Take the Scenic Route Through Pusuk

Not every trip from Bangsal needs to follow the coast.

If your next destination takes you toward Mataram or another part of Lombok, you can consider traveling through the Pusuk area.

The road winds through green hills and tropical forest, giving the journey a completely different atmosphere from the coastal route.

You may also see long-tailed macaques along parts of the road.

I prefer observing them from a safe distance rather than getting too close. They are wild animals, so keep food inside your bag, secure your belongings, and avoid encouraging them to climb onto you or your vehicle.

Pusuk works well if you want the drive itself to become part of your Lombok experience.

6. Try Local Lombok Food Around Bangsal and Pemenang

You do not always need another tourist attraction.

Sometimes having a proper local meal before continuing your trip is enough.

Around Bangsal, Pemenang, and along the surrounding roads, you can find small local restaurants and warungs serving Indonesian and Lombok dishes.

Look for foods such as ayam taliwang, plecing kangkung, grilled fish, satay, and other simple local dishes.

After several days on the Gilis, stopping somewhere local on mainland Lombok can also be a nice change of atmosphere.

What to Do If You Only Have a Few Hours in Bangsal

Not everyone has half a day available, so I would plan your stops according to how much spare time you have.

If you have around 1–2 hours

Keep things simple.

Bangsal → Sire Beach → Bangsal Harbour

This works better before your boat because you stay relatively close to the harbor.

If you have around 3–4 hours

You can explore a little farther.

Bangsal → Nipah Beach → coastal viewpoint → Bangsal

Make sure you leave enough buffer before your scheduled boat departure.

If you have half a day after returning from the Gilis

This is where you have more freedom.

Bangsal → Sire Beach → Nipah Beach → Malimbu Hill → Senggigi

You can turn what would normally be a direct transfer into a relaxed half-day trip along Lombok’s northwest coast.

Things to Know Before Exploring Around Bangsal

If you plan to explore things to do near Bangsal Harbour before going to the Gili Islands, the most important thing is not to make your itinerary too tight.

Boat operations can depend on the operator, weather, sea conditions, and other operational factors.

I would always leave enough time to return to the harbor, organize your luggage, buy or confirm your ticket, and find the correct departure point.

If you are traveling with suitcases, think about luggage storage before leaving the harbor area.

I also recommend using official ticket counters or reputable boat operators rather than accepting the first offer you receive while walking around.

After returning from the Gili Islands, everything becomes easier because you no longer have a boat departure to worry about.

That is why I personally think the Bangsal to Senggigi route is one of the best opportunities for a short road trip.

Getting Around Bangsal and North Lombok

Bangsal itself is relatively small, but the interesting places around it are spread out.

A scooter can work well if you travel solo, feel comfortable riding in Lombok, and only carry a small backpack.

For couples, families, or anyone traveling with suitcases after visiting the Gilis, a car is usually more comfortable.

Using a private car with a driver also makes spontaneous stops much easier. You can visit a beach, have lunch, stop at a viewpoint, and then continue directly to your hotel without worrying about your luggage.

Explore Bangsal with Rental Car Lombok by Vibes Lombok

If you already need transportation after arriving at Bangsal, you can turn your transfer into part of your Lombok holiday.

With Rental Car Lombok by Vibes Lombok, you can arrange a private car for trips from Bangsal to Senggigi, Mataram, Lombok International Airport, or other destinations around the island.

Instead of driving directly from the harbor to your hotel, you could create a route such as:

Bangsal → Sire Beach → Nipah Beach → Malimbu → Senggigi

Or, if you are traveling toward Mataram:

Bangsal → Pusuk → Mataram → your hotel or next destination

Having a private car also means you can keep your luggage in the vehicle while exploring along the way.

It is a simple option if you want more flexibility without turning the day into a complicated tour.

And then…..

Bangsal does not need to be just a place where you wait for a boat.

With a little extra time, you can swim at a quiet beach, eat grilled fish at a local warung, enjoy a scenic drive, or watch the sunset from the hills before continuing your journey.

So if you are searching for the best things to do in Bangsal Lombok, my suggestion is simple: look beyond the harbor.

A few hours are enough to turn your journey before or after the Gili Islands into another memorable part of your Lombok trip.
