Should You Get Extra Insurance for a Self-Drive Car in Lombok

Lombok Coastal Road Insurance Guide.png

Renting a self-drive car is one of my favorite ways to explore Lombok.

You can leave early in the morning, stop at a quiet beach, change your itinerary whenever you want, and travel without waiting for a driver or tour schedule.

But self-driving also means you take more responsibility for the rental car.

That leads to an important question:

Should you get extra insurance for a self-drive car in Lombok?

For many travelers, extra insurance can be useful, especially if the basic rental protection still leaves you responsible for an excess or certain types of damage.

However, extra insurance is not automatically necessary for everyone.

The best approach is to understand what your rental already includes and then decide whether the additional protection is worth the cost.

Why Insurance Matters More When You Choose Self-Drive

When you rent a car with a driver, the driver handles the vehicle.

With a self-drive rental, you are the person responsible for driving, parking, navigating unfamiliar roads, and returning the vehicle in the agreed condition.

That does not mean self-driving in Lombok is dangerous.

In fact, having your own car gives you a lot of flexibility.

But unfamiliar road conditions can increase the chance of small incidents.

For example, you may encounter:

  • Narrow village roads
  • Motorcycles passing closely
  • Tight parking areas
  • Uneven road surfaces
  • Loose gravel
  • Potholes
  • Animals crossing the road
  • Unpaved access roads near beaches or rural attractions

A minor scratch, damaged tire, or cracked windshield may not ruin your holiday, but it can create an unexpected expense if your rental protection does not fully cover it.

That is where extra insurance becomes relevant.

First Check What Your Self-Drive Rental Already Includes

Before purchasing any additional protection, check your rental agreement.

Some car rentals already include basic insurance or damage protection.

However, basic protection may still come with an excess, sometimes called a deductible.

The excess is the amount you may have to pay yourself when the rental vehicle is damaged.

For example, imagine your rental includes insurance but has an excess of a certain amount.

If there is covered damage, you may still be responsible for that amount before the insurance protection applies.

This is why the phrase “insurance included” does not always mean “zero cost if something happens.”

Always ask the rental provider:

  • Is insurance included?
  • How much is the excess?
  • What types of damage are covered?
  • Are tires and windshields included?
  • Is underbody damage covered?
  • What happens if the vehicle needs towing?
  • Are there situations where the insurance becomes invalid?

Knowing these answers is more important than simply asking whether the car is insured.

What Does Extra Rental Car Insurance Do?

Extra insurance is designed to reduce the financial risk that remains after the basic rental protection.

Depending on the product, it may cover or reimburse expenses such as:

  • Rental vehicle excess
  • Windshield damage
  • Tire damage
  • Headlights and mirrors
  • Underbody damage
  • Towing charges
  • Lost keys
  • Theft or vandalism
  • Damage administration fees

Coverage varies significantly between policies.

Never assume that every extra insurance product covers every type of damage.

Always check the policy wording before purchasing.

When Extra Insurance Makes Sense for Self-Drive Travelers

Extra insurance may be worth considering if you are renting a car for several days and plan to explore different parts of Lombok.

It can be especially useful if this is your first time driving in Indonesia.

You may also want additional protection if you plan to visit multiple destinations instead of simply driving between your hotel and the airport.

For example, a Lombok road trip could take you between:

Kuta Lombok, Mandalika, Selong Belanak, Senggigi, Mataram, Sembalun, Bangsal, and other areas around the island.

The more time you spend on the road, the more exposure you naturally have to minor driving incidents.

Extra insurance may also be worthwhile if you simply prefer predictable travel expenses.

Some travelers would rather pay a little more before their trip instead of worrying about a potentially larger bill afterward.

When You May Not Need Extra Insurance

Extra insurance is not always necessary.

You may already have sufficient coverage through another source.

For example, some travelers have rental car protection included with:

  • Premium credit cards
  • Travel insurance
  • Existing vehicle insurance
  • Rental company premium protection

If you already have coverage, purchasing another policy may create unnecessary duplication.

The important thing is to check whether your existing insurance actually applies to a rental car in Indonesia.

Also look at exclusions, maximum claim limits, rental duration limits, and vehicle restrictions.

Do not assume that a credit card automatically covers every rental vehicle everywhere in the world.

What About RentalCover.com?

Another option is purchasing rental car protection from an independent provider.

One example is RentalCover.com.

RentalCover offers products designed to cover rental car excess and certain damage-related costs, depending on the specific plan, country, and eligibility requirements.

Its current information explains that some plans may include protection for items such as windshields, headlights, tires, underbody damage, towing, keys, and other rental-related costs that are not always included in standard rental protection.

This can be useful for travelers who want additional protection but prefer to compare options outside the rental counter.

However, RentalCover is separate from the rental company.

In some types of coverage, you may still need to pay the rental company first and then submit the required documents to make a claim with the insurance provider. RentalCover’s claims information, for example, explains that renters may need a final rental invoice showing the amount charged before submitting the claim.

Because policies differ by country and customer, always review the exact coverage documents for your trip.

Understand Excess Before You Decide

One term worth understanding before renting a self-drive car is excess.

An excess is the amount of financial responsibility that remains with the renter when damage occurs.

For example, a rental company may provide basic protection but still require you to pay part of the cost if there is damage.

Some additional insurance products are designed specifically to cover this amount.

RentalCover describes excess cover as an independent alternative that can cover excess charges paid to a rental company for covered damage.

Understanding the excess makes it much easier to compare insurance options.

Instead of simply asking:

“Do I have insurance?”

Ask:

“What is the maximum amount I could personally have to pay if the car is damaged?”

That question gives you a much clearer picture of your actual financial risk.

Insurance Does Not Replace Careful Driving

Having additional protection should never make you less careful.

When driving around Lombok, always adjust your speed to the road conditions.

Do not blindly follow navigation apps if they send you through a road that looks unsuitable for your rental car.

Some shortcuts may be narrow, steep, or unpaved.

If you are unsure about a route, ask locals or your rental provider first.

It is also worth being extra careful when parking.

Many minor rental car incidents happen at low speed rather than during long-distance driving.

A tight parking area, narrow hotel driveway, or crowded roadside parking space can easily lead to small scratches.

Inspect the Car Before Leaving

One of the simplest ways to protect yourself when renting a self-drive car is to document its condition before starting the trip.

Take photos or a short video showing:

  • Front bumper
  • Rear bumper
  • Both sides of the vehicle
  • Wheels and tires
  • Windshield
  • Mirrors
  • Headlights
  • Interior
  • Fuel level

If there are existing scratches or dents, make sure they are acknowledged before you leave.

You should also repeat the process when returning the vehicle.

Good documentation can prevent disagreements about whether damage happened during your rental period.

Know What Can Make Insurance Invalid

Insurance coverage often comes with conditions.

For example, coverage may be affected if the driver:

  • Drives without the required license
  • Drives while intoxicated
  • Allows an unauthorized person to drive
  • Uses the vehicle outside permitted areas
  • Ignores rental agreement restrictions
  • Drives recklessly
  • Uses the car for prohibited activities

The exact rules depend on the rental agreement and insurance policy.

That is another reason why reading the terms matters.

Having insurance does not mean every incident will automatically qualify for coverage.

Self-Drive or With Driver?

If you are still unsure whether self-drive is right for you, think about how you prefer to travel.

Self-drive is usually better if you want:

  • Maximum flexibility
  • Privacy
  • Freedom to change plans
  • Independent road trips
  • More time at each destination

Renting with a driver can be better if you:

  • Do not feel comfortable driving in Indonesia
  • Want to relax during the journey
  • Plan a long day trip
  • Do not want to think about navigation or parking

Neither option is automatically better.

It depends on your travel style.

At Vibes Lombok Car Rental & Tours, travelers can choose a rental option that matches the way they want to explore Lombok, including self-drive and rental with a driver.

If you choose self-drive, ask about the rental conditions and insurance before confirming your booking.

Understanding everything upfront makes the experience much easier.

So Should You Get Extra Insurance?

For many self-drive travelers, extra insurance is worth considering.

It can reduce the financial uncertainty associated with rental car damage and make your road trip feel more relaxed.

But you should not buy it automatically.

Start by checking:

  1. What insurance your rental already includes
  2. How much the excess is
  3. What damage is excluded
  4. Whether your credit card or travel insurance already provides coverage
  5. How much extra protection would cost

If the remaining financial risk feels larger than you are comfortable with, extra insurance may be a sensible choice.

If your existing coverage already gives you sufficient protection, additional insurance may not add much value.

The important thing is making the decision before you start driving, not after something happens.

With the right car, clear rental conditions, and suitable protection, a self-drive road trip can be one of the best ways to explore Lombok at your own pace.
