South Lombok is one of my favorite parts of the island to explore because some of the most beautiful Lombok beaches sit relatively close to each other. Instead of spending the whole day at one beach, you can drive along the coast and visit several different spots in a single trip.
Some beaches are perfect for swimming, some attract surfers, while others are better for simply sitting under the sun and enjoying the scenery. If you have a car, exploring them becomes much easier because you can decide where to stop and how long you want to stay.
Why Explore South Lombok Beaches by Car?
Kuta Lombok works well as a starting point for exploring the southern coastline. Several popular beaches sit east and west of Kuta, so you can easily plan a half-day or full-day road trip.
Driving also gives you more flexibility. You can leave early, stop at viewpoints along the way, spend extra time at a beach you like, and continue to another destination without depending too much on transportation schedules.
For me, that freedom is one of the best reasons to explore Lombok beaches by car.
1. Tanjung Aan Beach
If this is your first trip to South Lombok, I would definitely put Tanjung Aan near the top of the list.
The beach is known for its distinctive white sand and clear blue water. The bay also has relatively calm sections that work well for swimming and relaxing. Tanjung Aan sits roughly 15–20 minutes from the Kuta area by road, making it one of the easiest beaches to include in a South Lombok road trip.
Another reason I like this area is Bukit Merese, which sits close to the beach. You can combine both destinations and finish your visit with a short walk up the hill for a wider view of the coastline.
Best for: swimming, relaxing, photography, and first-time visitors.
2. Seger Beach
Seger Beach sits between the Kuta and Tanjung Aan areas, so it makes sense as another stop when exploring the eastern side of South Lombok.
The beach has a mix of coastal scenery, hills and waves. You can also walk toward Seger Hill if you want a higher viewpoint instead of spending all your time on the sand.
Seger is around 8.8 kilometers from Tanjung Aan, which makes the two beaches easy to combine in the same trip.
A simple route could be:
Kuta Lombok → Seger Beach → Tanjung Aan → Bukit Merese
This route works especially well if you only have half a day.
3. Mawun Beach
Drive west from Kuta and the scenery starts to feel a little quieter.
Mawun Beach is one of the Lombok beaches I would recommend if you want beautiful coastal scenery without spending the entire day around the busier Mandalika area.
The beach sits inside a curved bay surrounded by hills. From Kuta Mandalika, the drive usually takes around 20–25 minutes. Most of the road is paved, although some sections can be narrower. Parking is also available relatively close to the beach.
The shape of the bay creates different water conditions in different sections, so always check the waves before swimming.
Best for: scenery, swimming, couples, and a slower beach day.
4. Mawi Beach
If surfing is part of your South Lombok trip, you may want to continue toward Mawi Beach.
Mawi sits between Mawun and Selong Belanak and is better known among surfers, particularly those with some experience. Indonesia Travel notes that the beach is especially popular with intermediate and experienced surfers.
Even if you do not surf, the combination of hills, white sand and open ocean makes Mawi worth considering if you prefer places that feel more adventurous.
I would allow more time for this stop rather than trying to squeeze it into a very tight schedule.
Best for: surfing, coastal views, and travelers looking beyond the most popular beaches.
5. Selong Belanak Beach
Selong Belanak offers a different atmosphere from Mawi.
It has a wide stretch of white sand and is particularly popular with beginner surfers because parts of the beach have gentler waves. Surfboard rentals and lessons are commonly available around the beachfront.
For me, this makes Selong Belanak one of the easiest beaches to recommend to groups where everyone wants something different.
One person can try surfing while someone else relaxes on the beach or grabs something to eat nearby.
Best for: beginner surfing, families, long beach walks, and relaxed afternoons.
6. Kuta Beach Lombok
You do not always have to drive far.
Kuta Beach itself can become the first or final stop of your road trip. It sits in the main tourism area of South Lombok, with restaurants, cafés and accommodation nearby.
Kuta is also conveniently located between beaches on the eastern and western sides of the coast, which is why I think it works better as a base than simply another beach destination. The official Indonesia tourism site lists Kuta, Tanjung Aan and Mawun among Central Lombok’s notable beaches.
If you stay around Kuta, you can explore different directions on different days without constantly changing hotels.
My Suggested South Lombok Beach Route
You do not need to visit every beach in one day. I would actually split them into two routes.
For the east side, start from Kuta and visit Seger Beach, Tanjung Aan and Bukit Merese.
For the west side, drive from Kuta toward Mawun, Mawi and Selong Belanak.
This approach gives you more time at each destination and keeps the trip relaxed instead of turning your holiday into a race between beaches.
Tips for Visiting Lombok Beaches by Car
Start earlier in the day if you plan to visit several locations. You will have more time for spontaneous stops and will not need to rush before sunset.
I also recommend downloading an offline map before leaving your accommodation. Mobile coverage is generally available around the main tourism areas, but having an offline map gives you a backup when exploring quieter roads.
Bring drinking water, sunscreen, cash for parking or small local purchases, and something to cover yourself from the sun.
Most importantly, do not try to plan every minute. Sometimes the best part of driving around South Lombok is finding a viewpoint or beach that makes you want to stay longer.

South Lombok has enough beaches to fill several days of your itinerary.

And because many of these Lombok beaches connect through the southern road network, traveling by car makes it much easier to explore more than one destination.
My suggestion is simple: choose a direction, keep your schedule flexible, and give yourself enough time to actually enjoy each beach rather than just taking a photo and moving on.
