Lombok is one of those places where getting from one destination to another can be just as memorable as the destination itself. You can start the morning beside the ocean, drive through green hills and small villages, and end the day surrounded by mountains.
That is why I think exploring Lombok by car makes a lot of sense. You have the freedom to stop when you see a beautiful viewpoint, take a short break at a quiet beach, or simply slow down when the scenery gets interesting.
If you are planning a road trip, these are some of the best scenic drives in Lombok that I recommend adding to your route.
Why Lombok Is Perfect for a Scenic Road Trip
One thing I like about Lombok is how quickly the landscape changes.
Drive along the west coast and you get ocean views, beaches, and hills. Head north or east and the scenery gradually turns greener and more mountainous. Around Sembalun, the atmosphere feels completely different again, with farmland and dramatic slopes around Mount Rinjani.
A car also gives you something that a fixed tour schedule cannot always offer: flexibility.
When you find a viewpoint you like, you can stop. When a beach looks inviting, you can spend an extra hour there. You do not need to turn every day into a checklist of attractions.
Here are the scenic routes I would consider first.
1. Senggigi to Malimbu and Bangsal Coastal Drive
If you enjoy ocean views, this is probably one of the easiest scenic drives to recommend.
Start around Senggigi and follow the coastal road north toward Malimbu and eventually Bangsal. Along the way, the road climbs and drops through sections of coastline where you can see the sea from above.
Malimbu Hill is one of the highlights. The elevated coastline makes it a good place to stop for a while and enjoy the view before continuing north.
I especially like this route in the afternoon. If the weather cooperates, you can combine the drive with sunset views along Lombok’s west coast.
This route also works well if Bangsal is already part of your travel plan, especially when you are heading to or returning from the Gili Islands.
2. Drive Through the Green Hills of Pusuk Pass
If the Senggigi route is all about the coast, Pusuk gives you a completely different side of Lombok.
The road passes through greener, hillier terrain and has plenty of curves along the way. It feels cooler and more shaded than many coastal areas, which makes the drive enjoyable when you want a break from beaches.
Pusuk sits around the border area between West and North Lombok, so it can also fit naturally into a road trip toward the northern part of the island.
You may also see monkeys around parts of the route. I would enjoy them from a little distance and keep food and small belongings inside the car rather than trying to interact with them.
3. Sembalun and the Mount Rinjani Highlands
For me, Sembalun offers one of the most impressive road-trip landscapes in Lombok.
The closer you get to the highlands, the more dramatic the surroundings become. Roads cut between mountains, farmland spreads across the valley, and Mount Rinjani dominates the wider landscape when the sky is clear.
Sembalun is also one of the main access areas for Mount Rinjani. The surrounding region is known for open savannah landscapes, hills, and mountain scenery.
You do not need to climb Rinjani to enjoy this part of Lombok.
Just driving around Sembalun can already become one of the highlights of your trip.
I prefer starting early for this route. Morning conditions often make mountain travel more comfortable, and you have plenty of time to stop around viewpoints or explore the villages without rushing.
Keep in mind that mountain weather can change quickly. A clear Rinjani view is never something I would treat as guaranteed.
4. Kuta Lombok to Mawun and Selong Belanak
South Lombok has some fantastic beaches, but the roads connecting them are also part of the experience.
From Kuta Lombok, drive west toward Mawun Beach and continue toward Selong Belanak if you have enough time.
The journey takes you through a mix of hills, villages, open countryside, and glimpses of the southern coastline.
Mawun itself sits inside a curved bay surrounded by green hills. From Kuta Mandalika, the drive takes roughly 20–25 minutes under typical conditions, and the access road is mostly paved, although some sections can feel narrower.
I like this route for a relaxed half-day trip because you do not need a complicated itinerary.
Drive, stop at Mawun, continue west, find lunch somewhere along the way, and take your time.
5. Kuta Mandalika to Tanjung Aan and the East Coast
If you want a shorter scenic drive around South Lombok, start from Kuta Mandalika and head toward Tanjung Aan.
This area combines turquoise water, rolling hills, beaches, and open coastal scenery.
Tanjung Aan consists of two bays separated by a hill, giving the area a beautiful combination of white sand and elevated ocean views.
You can also add Merese Hill to the trip.
What I like about this route is how easy it is to adjust. You can turn it into a quick morning drive or spend most of the day exploring beaches and smaller roads farther east.
If you are staying around Kuta, this is probably one of the simplest Lombok road trips to fit into your schedule.
6. Explore the Quiet Coastal Roads of Sekotong
Sekotong offers a different road-trip experience.
Instead of focusing on one famous attraction, I would come here for the journey itself. You can drive through coastal landscapes, small settlements, hills, and quieter stretches of western Lombok.
The area also faces several small islands, so you will occasionally find beautiful coastal views along the way.
Sekotong makes sense when you want to slow down and explore without trying to visit as many famous Lombok attractions as possible.
For me, that is exactly what makes a good road trip sometimes.
Which Lombok Scenic Drive Should You Choose?
If you only have enough time for one or two routes, this quick guide can help.
| What You Want to See | Recommended Scenic Drive |
|---|---|
| Ocean views and sunset | Senggigi – Malimbu |
| Forest and winding roads | Pusuk Pass |
| Mountains and valleys | Sembalun |
| Beaches and countryside | Kuta – Mawun – Selong Belanak |
| Easy coastal sightseeing | Kuta – Tanjung Aan |
| A quieter road trip | Sekotong |
Personally, I would choose Sembalun for mountain scenery and Senggigi to Malimbu for coastal scenery.
They show two completely different sides of Lombok.
Tips for Driving Around Lombok
Driving gives you plenty of freedom, but I would still keep a few things in mind.
Start early when heading to Sembalun or other mountain areas. Keep enough fuel in the tank before exploring quieter routes, and download an offline map as a backup.
I also would not plan the schedule too tightly. One of the best parts of a Lombok road trip is finding places you did not originally plan to visit.
Most importantly, take your time on winding mountain roads and when passing through villages. The goal is to enjoy the drive, not reach the next destination as quickly as possible.
Explore Lombok with Rental Car Lombok by Vibes Lombok
A road trip becomes much easier when you can decide where to go and how long you want to stay.
With Rental Car Lombok by Vibes Lombok, you can choose a car that fits your travel style and build your own route around the island.
If you enjoy driving, a self-drive rental gives you plenty of freedom to explore Lombok at your own pace.
If you would rather watch the scenery than think about navigation, you can choose a car with a local driver instead. This option also works well for longer routes such as Sembalun, North Lombok, or a full-day trip across several destinations.
There is no need to rush from attraction to attraction. Choose the route you like, make a few stops, and enjoy Lombok from the road.
Final Thoughts
The best thing about a Lombok road trip is that the scenery does not begin only when you arrive.
Sometimes the winding road through Sembalun, the ocean appearing between the hills near Malimbu, or an unexpected viewpoint in South Lombok becomes the part of the trip you remember most.
Whether you prefer mountains, beaches, forests, or quiet coastal roads, these best scenic drives in Lombok give you plenty of ways to experience the island beyond its most famous attractions.
Pick a route, leave some space in your schedule, and enjoy the drive.
