When people hear the name Mandalika today, MotoGP often comes to mind almost immediately. The sound of racing engines, packed grandstands, and riders speeding through a circuit surrounded by green hills have become familiar images of Lombok.
However, Mandalika International Circuit has a relatively short history.
The History of Mandalika International Circuit began as part of a much bigger plan to develop Mandalika into an international tourism destination. Within just a few years, the project went from an ambitious idea to a circuit capable of hosting MotoGP and WorldSBK.
What makes the story even more interesting for me is its location. Instead of sitting inside a traditional motorsport complex far from tourist areas, the circuit stands close to beaches, hills, hotels, restaurants, and some of South Lombok’s most popular attractions.
So, how did it all begin?
How the Mandalika Circuit Project Began
One of the biggest milestones came on January 28, 2019.
Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation, better known as ITDC, signed promoter agreements with Dorna Sports in Madrid. The agreements covered both the MotoGP World Championship and the World Superbike Championship.
The plan aimed to bring these major motorcycle racing events to Mandalika in Lombok.
This agreement mattered because the circuit formed part of a larger tourism development rather than standing as an isolated racing project.
ITDC had already developed Mandalika as an integrated tourism area in Central Lombok. Adding a world-class motorsport venue created another reason for international visitors to discover this part of the island.
Construction activity for the Mandalika International Street Circuit also began in 2019. From that point, the project quickly became one of the most talked-about infrastructure developments in Lombok.
Why Mandalika Became the Location for the Circuit
Mandalika offers something that very few racing destinations can replicate.
You have a modern race circuit, but just outside it you can find tropical beaches, rolling hills, local villages, restaurants, and resorts.
Kuta Mandalika sits nearby. Tanjung Aan Beach and Bukit Merese are also within easy reach.
That combination made Mandalika suitable for a destination where motorsport and tourism could support each other.
Visitors do not have to fly to Lombok only to watch a race. They can spend the morning at the circuit, explore the coastline later in the day, and continue their trip around Central Lombok.
I think this connection between racing and travel has become one of Mandalika’s strongest characteristics.
When Was Mandalika International Circuit Built?
The development moved forward from 2019, while construction and preparations continued into 2020 and 2021.
Building a circuit for international motorcycle racing involves much more than laying asphalt. The project needed track infrastructure, safety systems, paddock facilities, access roads, spectator areas, drainage, and facilities that met international racing requirements.
After roughly two years of development, the circuit finally reached its biggest milestone.
On November 12, 2021, Indonesian President Joko Widodo officially inaugurated the Mandalika Circuit.
That date effectively marked the beginning of a new chapter for motorsport in Lombok.
The circuit now commonly carries the name Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, although many visitors simply call it Mandalika Circuit.
WorldSBK Became Mandalika’s First Major International Race
MotoGP may have made Mandalika famous globally, but MotoGP was not the circuit’s first international championship.
That title belongs to the FIM Superbike World Championship or WorldSBK.
Mandalika hosted the Indonesian WorldSBK round on November 19–21, 2021, only days after the circuit’s official inauguration.
Heavy rain affected the race weekend and forced organizers to change parts of the schedule, but the championship still completed its races. ITDC later described WorldSBK as the first international motorcycle racing event held at the circuit after its inauguration.
WorldSBK also gave organizers valuable real-world experience before the much larger MotoGP event arrived.
And that did not take long.
MotoGP Arrived in Mandalika in 2022
The moment many Indonesian motorsport fans had waited decades for finally arrived in 2022.
Before the race weekend, MotoGP riders completed an official pre-season test at Mandalika in February.
Then, in March, Lombok hosted the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia.
The event carried much more significance than simply introducing a new track to the MotoGP calendar.
It marked the return of MotoGP-class Grand Prix motorcycle racing to Indonesia after 25 years. Indonesia had last hosted a Grand Prix at Sentul in 1997.
Race day on March 20, 2022 became memorable for another reason: rain.
The difficult conditions delayed the start, but the race eventually went ahead. Miguel Oliveira won the wet Indonesian Grand Prix for KTM, ahead of Fabio Quartararo and Johann Zarco.
For Mandalika, that weekend helped introduce the circuit—and Lombok itself—to millions of motorsport fans around the world.
What Makes Mandalika International Circuit Unique?
The scenery immediately separates Mandalika from many other circuits on the MotoGP calendar.
The track measures approximately 4.3 kilometers and includes 17 corners, with six left-hand corners and eleven right-hand corners. Its longest straight measures around 723 meters.
But numbers do not really explain what makes the place special.
When you look beyond the track barriers, you can see the tropical landscape of South Lombok. Hills surround parts of the area, while beautiful beaches sit only a short drive away.
The circuit also belongs to an integrated sports, entertainment, and tourism destination.
That means a visit to Mandalika can easily become part of a wider Lombok itinerary.
You can combine the circuit with places such as:
- Kuta Mandalika
- Tanjung Aan Beach
- Bukit Merese
- Seger Beach
- Traditional villages around Central Lombok
This is why I see Mandalika Circuit as more than a destination for motorsport fans.
How Mandalika Circuit Changed Lombok Tourism
Before the circuit opened, Lombok already attracted travelers with its beaches, mountains, waterfalls, traditional Sasak culture, and the Gili Islands.
Mandalika International Circuit added something different.
It gave Lombok a major international event that could bring thousands of visitors to the island at the same time.
During major racing weekends, people arrive not only to watch motorcycles. They need accommodation, transportation, restaurants, and activities to fill the rest of their trip.
Some travelers also extend their stay after MotoGP and explore other parts of Lombok.
That creates a natural connection between motorsport and tourism.
For international audiences who had never heard much about Lombok before, seeing Mandalika on a global MotoGP broadcast also provided an introduction to the island.
In that sense, the circuit acts almost like a giant tourism showcase.
Can Tourists Visit Mandalika International Circuit?
You do not necessarily have to attend MotoGP to include Mandalika Circuit in your Lombok trip.
The circuit sits inside the wider Mandalika tourism area, so travelers can explore the surrounding destination throughout the year.
Access to specific circuit areas can depend on events and activities taking place at the time, so I recommend checking the latest schedule before visiting if you want to enter particular areas of the venue.
Even if you only see the circuit as part of a South Lombok road trip, its location makes it easy to combine with other attractions.
For example, you could start around Kuta Mandalika, visit the circuit area, continue toward Tanjung Aan Beach, and finish the afternoon at Bukit Merese.
That is a much better way to experience Mandalika than treating the circuit as the only destination.
Explore Mandalika with Rental Car Lombok by Vibes Lombok
Getting around becomes an important part of the experience if you want to see more than the circuit.
Public transportation options around Lombok do not always offer the flexibility that travelers need, especially when they want to combine several destinations in one day.
This is where Rental Car Lombok by Vibes Lombok can help.
A rental car gives you more freedom to arrange your own route around Mandalika and other parts of Lombok. You can travel between your hotel, Mandalika International Circuit, Kuta, Tanjung Aan, Bukit Merese, and other destinations without building your itinerary around fixed transportation schedules.
It can also make things easier if you arrive through Lombok International Airport and plan to explore several areas during your stay.
Whether you come for MotoGP or simply want to discover South Lombok, having reliable transportation gives you more time to enjoy the destination instead of worrying about how to move from one place to another.
From a Racing Project to a Lombok Landmark
The History of Mandalika International Circuit developed surprisingly quickly.
The Dorna and ITDC agreement arrived in 2019. Construction followed. President Joko Widodo inaugurated the circuit in November 2021, WorldSBK became its first major international racing event, and MotoGP arrived in March 2022.
In only a few years, Mandalika went from an ambitious tourism and motorsport project to one of Lombok’s most recognizable modern landmarks.
Today, I do not think the circuit represents racing alone.
It represents a new side of Lombok tourism—one where motorsport, beaches, culture, and road trips can all become part of the same journey.
And that is what makes Mandalika International Circuit different from just another racing track.
